This calling card was signed by Fitz John Porter in May 1891. Porter is most well known as commander of the Army of the Potomac’s 5th Corps during the Civil War. As a close associate of George McClellan, Porter was scapegoated after the embarrassing defeat at the Second Battle of Bull Run. The card was signed to “Miss L. H. Brown” in May 1891. This would have been two years after Porter left his role in the New York Police Commission. The address listed on the card is 68 West 68th Street, where Porter and his family moved in 1889. Measures 3 1/4” x 1 3/4”.
