Item No. 4807569
This letter signed by General Winfield Scott Hancock was written October 6, 1880—less than a month before he would lose the presidential election of that year to Republican James A. Garfield. Hancock, who is best remembered as the stalwart leader of the Army of the Potomac’s 2nd Corps from 1863-65, was in 1880 still serving in the Army as commander of the Military Division of the Atlantic, headquartered at New York. The letter was written from Governor’s Island in New York Harbor to a Dr. Edward C. Mann of Fort Washington, New York. Hancock thanks Mann “for your kind letter of the 30th ultimo.” The general’s distinctive signature is at the bottom. The dimensions of the letter are about 5 1/2” x 8 1/2”. It is in excellent condition with light toning. Creased at the original folds.
