1862 Treasury Department Letter to Marine Corps Paymaster, Major William W. Russell - Regarding Dismissal of Marine Lieutenant George W. Cummins

An interesting 1862 letter from Hobart Berrian of the U.S. Treasury Department to Major William W. Russell, Paymaster of the U.S. Marine Corps. The letter, which is partially printed and partially handwritten on Treasury Department stationery, concerns the dismissal of 2nd Lieutenant George W. Cummins of the Marine Corps. It is signed at the bottom by Berrian. Briefly docketed on reverse. It measures about 8” x 9 3/4” and is in very good condition with light foxing and toning. Creased where originally folded. There is separation at one of the folds, extending about 2” from the edge. The letter reads:

Information has been received at this office, from the Navy Department, that Second Lieutenant George W. Cummins, of the Marine Corps, was dismissed from the service on the 14th inst.Be pleased to transmit his account to this office for settlement.
