Unmounted Albumen Image of Union Artillery Camp at City Point, Virginia, 1864-1865

$400.00

Item No. 1419881

Pictured in this unmounted and uncredited albumen image is a Union Army artillery encampment. The pencil inscription on the reverse reads, "Artillery Camp at City Point, Va." Likely made in 1864 or 1865, the image features several guns, limbers, and caissons placed at intervals. A number of soldiers can be seen, but few seem to have paid attention to the photographer's work. At the left, a neat row of huts can be seen, each with a canvas roof. At the center-rear there is a palisaded area of unknown purpose, while on the right-hand side plumes of smokeperhaps from campfirescan be seen in the distance. The foreground appears to be a muddy and rutted mess. There is a crease at the top-right corner of the image, else very good. Measures about 4 1/4" x 3 3/4". Unmounted.

This photograph was previously owned by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and deaccessioned from their collection.
