1864 Southern Express Company Letter Regarding Cotton Cards

A short letter written to the Inferior Court of Hall County in Gainesville, Georgia, by Southern Express Company Agent J. M. Born in Atlanta, urging the court to send for a package containing cotton cards. Valued according to Born at $14.25, cotton cards were hand tools used (largely by enslaved people) to process raw cotton into spinnable thread. The letter measures about 4 1/2” x 5 1/2” and comes in a blue postal cover bearing a pair of Confederate 5-cent postage stamps.
