This is a really interesting broadside advertisement from Philadelphia. It is undated, but can presumed to be from the end of the Civil War or shortly after when large quantities of surplus military goods would have been available. Imagine the vast quantities of goods and materials of all varieties that would have been available as the Army demobilized. The broadside reads, “$100,000 Invested in Army Goods at United States Government Auctions, and Will Be Sold, Wholesale and Retail, at Very Low Prices.”

Then follows a list of the many goods available, including leather tack, saddles, and horse blankets; “India Rubber Tent Blankets, Ponchos, and Overcoats”; blue infantry overcoats and pants; Army tents (“three sizes, suitable for camp meetings and excursions”); axes and picks; “heavy hand sewn army shoes (by the case)”; “dress and musician’s coats, suitable for bands”; forage and McClellan caps; haversacks; canteens; knapsacks; stretchers; and camp kettles.

The broadside measures about 9 1/4” x 11 3/4”. The paper is thin, but in excellent condition. A section of paper is missing along the top edge. Small tears on other edges. Creases where originally folded. Very minor foxing. It would display nicely in a frame.
