A wonderful CDV view of several officers belonging to Companies A and I of the 1st Connecticut Heavy Artillery. The men were posed outside of Cornwalis Cave near Yorktown, where Confederate artillery shells had been stored. The two men standing at left and right each rest a boot on top of a shell. The two men at center are seated on a bench that is stenciled “Col. Tyler” and “Siege Train,” referring to the regiment’s commanding officer, Colonel Robert O. Tyler, who commanded the Army of the Potomac’s siege train during the Peninsula Campaign. The man standing second from the right, holding an oilcloth cap, is believed to be Captain Sanford H. Perkins of Company I. The reverse lacks the Mathew Brady paper label, but this image is known to be No. 406 in the famous photographer’s “Brady’s Album Gallery” series. Penciled notes on the reverse of the carte indicate this image appears on page 47 of The Image of War Vol. 2: The Guns of ‘62. The carte is in excellent, crisp condition and measures about 4” x 2 1/2”.
