Offered here is an excellent Civil War CDV. The image features Union General Samuel P. Heintzelman, whose signature is found below his portrait. The reverse features the back mark of Alexander Gardner's studio, "Photographer to the Army of the Potomac." An autograph seeker wrote in the margin, "Will Gen Heintzelman please write his name below his picture so it will show in an album." "Gen. Heintzelman" is also written across the top (in another hand).

The CDV measures about 2 1/4" x 4" and is in excellent condition as shown.

Heintzelman served admirably as commander of the 3rd Corps during the Peninsula and Second Bull Run campaigns, but with high command shuffling in late 1862 he was transferred to the Department of Washington, where he spent the rest of the war in charge of the capital's defenses.
