CDV of Grounds of Lovell General Hospital in Portsmouth Grove, Rhode Island - Near Newport
Item No.
A very rare CDV view of Lovell General Hospital, a U.S. Army hospital near Newport, Rhode Island, in Portsmouth Grove. In service from July 1862 to August 1865, thousands of sick and wounded men were treated at Lovell, including many men convicted by court martial and confederate prisoners of war. In this CDV by Newport photographer Joshua A. Williams, several buildings can be seen. A bearded soldier stands next to one of the buildings and looks toward the camera. In the background on the right, several other soldiers can be seen standing in front of other buildings which, from another CDV, are known to be the camp post office, commissary, and Kinsley’s Express office. The carte is in very good condition as shown. It measures about 4” x 2 1/2”. Williams’s backmark is on the reverse.
