Item No. 7398772

A very rare CDV view of Lovell General Hospital, a U.S. Army hospital near Newport, Rhode Island. In service from July 1862 to August 1865, thousands of sick and wounded men were treated at Lovell, including many men convicted by court martial and confederate prisoners of war. In this CDV by Newport photographer Joshua A. Williams, several of the camp’s buildings can be seen, including the Kinsley’s Express office. In the foreground are several soldiers posing, two of whom are holding brooms and two others holding dogs. A young girl is seen behind the men and some other soldiers are going about their business near the buildings. The carte is in excellent condition as shown. It measures about 4” x 2 1/2”. Williams’s backmark is on the reverse.
