An excellent early war CDV of then-Captain Montgomery C. Meigs. The image is dated to March 1861 based on a similar image in a slightly different pose, but made in the same sitting (see Library of Congress LC-DIG-ds-04982). Meigs was a Captain in the Corps of Engineers at the time, but within weeks would be promoted Colonel of the 11th US Infantry. Meigs is best known for serving as Quartermaster General of the Army. His record in this role was regarded as outstanding, both in effectiveness and in ethical probity, and Secretary of State William H. Seward viewed it as a key factor in the Union’s victory. Meigs was also one of the principal architects of Arlington National Cemetery.

The carte is in very good condition with some slight damage to two corners. It measures about 2 1/2” x 4”. On the reverse is Edward Anthony’s backmark, with credit to Mathew Brady for the negative.
