CDV view of General Samuel S. Carroll, who poses proudly in his uniform coat with an empty sleeve. Carroll’s arm had been amputed in 1864 after he was wounded at the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. On the reverse is the New York backmark of E. & H. T. Anthony, with credit to the original Mathew Brady negative. Measures about 2 1/2” x 3 3/4”. This image was No. 163 in the General B. J. D. Irwin collection of U.S. & C.S. commanders.
