A nice early-war document related to the 2nd Illinois Cavalry. It is an August 1861 record of rations delivered by a Decatur, Illinois man to Captain Charles A. Vieregg’s Champaign Cavalry, which would soon become Company I of the 2nd Illinois Cavalry. The document is signed at the bottom by Vieregg and by Colonel Silas Noble, Colonel of the 2nd. It is endorsed on the reverse by Edward Everett, Quartermaster General for the State of Illinois (Everett was also a noted artist). The document reads:

Decatur Aug 7th 1861

This is to certify that D. Turnbolt of Decatur, Macon County Ills, Has furnished six rations (6) for three (3) officers and one Hundred and Seventy four (174) for Eighty Seven (87) Men at forty cents (40¢) for each ration. Also Two Hundred and Seventy (270) rations for Ninety (90) Horses at Twenty cents (20¢) for each ration. Also furnished Brad amtg to Four Dollars ($4.99). Bologna Sausage amtg to ($5.50) Five Dollars and Fifty cents. Rations for baggage man on home trip Two Dollars ($2.00).

Company known as the Champaign Cavalry belonging to Col Silas Noble’s Regiment of United States Volunteers.

The document measures about 7 1/2” x 9 3/4” and is in very good condition. Minor wear to top and left edges. Light foxing and toning. Creased where originally folded.
