A wonderfully clear large-format albumen image featuring the Army of the Potomac’s chief quartermaster, General Rufus Ingalls, seated with members of his staff at Brandy Station in 1864. Pencil notations around the edge of the mount identify several of the officers. In the back row, standing from left to right, are John C. Bales, Colonel Henry Page, an unknown officer, and Lieutenant Amos Webster. Seated in the front row are an unknown captain, General Ingalls, and another officer whose name is difficult to read, but may be Reuben Webster. An eighth man can be seen at the far left, observing the scene. The men are posed before a log cabin with a wood plank porch. The albumen measures 8 1/2” x 6 1/2” and is affixed to an 11” x 9” mount. On the reverse is an extensive listing of Mathew Brady and Alexander Gardner images available through Hartford, Connecticut publisher Taylor & Huntington. As mentioned above, this is a very clear image. The cabin appears to be in a wooded area. Trees are visible in the background and rays of sunlight, filtered through the leaves, are visible on the men’s uniforms and the porch behind them. The albumen is in fine condition. Note what appear to be some gouges around the stomach area of the officer on the far right. These imperfections must have been in the glass plate, because the surface of the albumen is undisturbed here. Please note that this image was slightly too large to fit on my flatbed scanner, and so a very small portion of the top and bottom edge of the mount do not appear here.
