A nice sixth plate tintype of a young Union artilleryman. The man’s name and unit are visible on both of his gauntlets (see closeup image). He is identified as Sergeant Joseph P. Cory of the 16th Ohio Battery. He is seated in a photographer’s studio, wears a shell jacket, vest, great coat, gauntlets, and has his forage cap with rain cover resting on the table to his side. The photographer applied a light rouge tint to his cheeks. Cory enlisted as a Corporal in August 1861 at the age of twenty-five. He mustered out in August 1865 at Camp Chase, Ohio. There are a couple of very slight bends in the plate, but they aren’t particularly noticeable. This great image is housed in a functional full leatherette case with brass latch and original leather hinge (which is somewhat delicate).
